Prologue
Brightstar yowled a warning to his new deputy, Silverlight, before turning to face the rampaging storm. All cats, apprentices, elders, whatever, were struggling to flee. Meadowflower was carrying her surviving kit, Emberkit, while supporting Petalsong. Smallwhisker and Goldensong limped along rapidly, flanked by warriors. Flooded water lapped at their feet and wind blew their tails in front of them. He rushed back to a Treeclan apprentice and dragged him forward. The wild storm roared as they dashed through the abandoned twolegplace. He turned and faced the great claws of the storm.

Thank you! Chapter one "Cloudstripe! Cloudstripe!" Emberstripe cheered his apprentice's name loudly. She was young for a warrior, 13 moons, but the clan needed warriors. He licked her shoulder, while she nuzzled his neck. "If you're not busy tomorrow, we can go hunting," she murmured. He nodded and sat beside her to hear what else Silverstar wanted to say. "Our clan is stronger than ever since the storm and Meadowflower's new kits will be welcomed. Nightbreeze, Cherrypaw, I would like to speak to you in your den. The clan is dismissed," She leapt down gracefully and made her way to the medicine den. Emberstripe beckoned Cloudstripe to follow and sat beside the fresh-kill pile. "Shall we share a Thrush?" He asked. Cloudstripe nodded, as Bluekit leapt onto her neck. Swiftkit sat tidily nearby, watching her sister with wide eyes. Emberstripe purred. "Under attack, are you?" He purred again. Swiftkit gave out a shaky purr. Cloudstripe gently shook Bluekit off her, looking flustered. "Of course not!" She shook her head and pouted. The other three laughed even more. After a moment, she began to chuckle too. "Bluekit? Swiftkit? Where are you?" The kits stared at the ground. The older two sighed and looked at each other. "You didn't tell Brightstream where you were, did you?" "... No..." A flustered queen darted over. The kits were immediately covered in frantic licks and purrs of relief. She glanced up at the two warriors. "Thank you for finding them," she picked up the two and headed over to the nursery. Emberstripe and Cloudstripe watched the two go. "I wish that I had some..." "Don't forget that you're on vigil tonight," Emberstripe bounded off to his nest, avoiding her gaze.

Chapter one Emberstripe yawned as the pale dawn light fell through the den. He looked out and, blinking in the bright light, saw Cloudstripe. He padded over. "Your vigil is over, you can speak now," She yawned and stretched out, fluffing out her long fur. Her blue eyes sparkled in the sun. "Finally, I'm exhausted," She shook off her pelt. It was surprisingly wet. "Did it rain last night?" Emberstripe asked. Her eyes glinted mischievously, but she didn't reply. He gulped. Knowing Cloudstripe, she would do what she wanted, even against orders. She caught his gaze. "Oh, don't look at me like that. I went for a drink and fell in the river. It takes ages for my fur to dry," she complained. "Cloudstripe, you can go and sleep 'til sunhigh. Emberstripe, go patrolling with Brindlegaze and Sootpaw," Nightstripe called. The two nodded and headed to their respective jobs. Brindlegaze smiled at him. "Coming with us today, are you? We shall check by twolegplace," She headed out, the two toms following her. After a little while, they ended up at the border of twolegplace. It was checked often as rogues liked to dwell there. "I'll go along west way, you two can check along the east way," Emberstripe said. The older warrior nodded and beckoned for her apprentice to follow. Emberstripe headed along the border. There were strange scents, but most were stale. There was also a scent of lavender, though it didn't grow until further down the border. Weird. Maybe a twoleg had planted some, he thought. He sat down by a puddle to drink, when a cat pushed him back. It was a small paw, a cat of about 8 to 10 moons, but a strong paw all the same. "What are you doing here?" It hissed; it was a she-cat. Emberstripe kicked the cat off and leapt on top of it. He took a good look at it. She was a tortoiseshell, with a scar on her leg. She was covered in mud. "What am I doing here? You're on Stormclan territory!" The cat hit him with an unsheathed claw. He winced but still held the cat. He unsheathed one claw and held it to her throat. The before angry, threatening eyes were filled with fear. In the light, he could see how thin the cat was, each of her ribs clear. He took pity on the little cat. There was moss on the tree, still wet. Emberstripe ripped a piece off and rubbed it on the cat. She tried to wriggle away, but he held he still. Now, without the dark mud covering her, he saw that she was only about 6 moons old. "Please, d-don't hurt me," She whispered. Her eyes were dull; all the fight had gone out of them. "Follow me." The cat scrambled up and stood meekly next to him. She obeyed him, staying by his side the entire time. "So, why are you here?" He asked. "Well, I've always been here. Mother kept me hidden for 6 moons. She said that this was our place and we must fight for it," Emberstripe could understand that, from looking at her. She had multiple wounds and limped on her front paw. "So, you fought every other cat you saw?" He asked. "NO!" The two froze. "Brindlegaze! What's wrong?" Emberstripe ran as fast as he could past the border, the she-cat limping hurriedly behind him. He could smell blood and rogues. He turned into a clearing. Brindlegaze was fighting a big tom. A smaller tom was nearby, wounded. Sootpaw's body lay to the side. Another rogue was crouched, about to leap onto Brindlegaze's back. Without thinking, Emberstripe threw himself at her and bit down on her ear, not letting go. She let out a cry of pain and raked her hind claws down his leg. It stung, but he held on. She let out a louder cry as the little loner bit her back. She shook them off and fled toward twolegplace. Brindlegaze kicked the tom away and he followed. Brindlegaze collapsed to the floor, blood rushing out of her wounds. "Don't go anywhere, I'll go get Nightbreeze," He dashed off. Nightbreeze was nearby, collecting herbs. Emberstripe gasped with exhaustion. "Sootpaw... Brindlegaze... Hurt... Help..." The medicine cat had already dashed off. He fell to the floor. He licked his wounds, one on his shoulder and one on his leg. The last thing he saw as he lost consciousness was the loner, hiding in the shadows.

Chapter two Emberstripe blinked slowly. He was still in the clearing where Nightbreeze had been, but his wounds didn't hurt as much. Craning his neck, he could see a poultice of some sort on his shoulder and he assumed there was another on his leg. Exhausted from exerting even a little energy, his head fell limply to the forest floor again. "Don't move." Cherrrypaw was nearby with the little loner, sorting through herbs. "Me and Aurora were helping Nightbreeze and she said that you mustn't move. Only following orders." Emberstripe believed that and instead looked up. It was past sunhigh. Cloudstripe said she'd wait for him! He struggled up, staggering on his injured leg. Promptly, he fell over again. The two she-cats dashed over. "I said don't move!" Cherrypaw hissed, but it was filled with concern rather than anger. "Whats happening over here?" Nightbreeze, an elegant older she-cat, strolled over. Her whiskers twitched in amusement. "My eyes may not be the best, but I believe you were on your other side before? As your medicine cat and aunt, it is my job to say that you are going to have to stay while I check your wounds again," he held still for her, but still itched to know the answers to his questions. "Brindlegaze? How is she? And Sootpaw?" Nightbreeze stiffened as she applied more cobwebs. "Brindlegaze is recovering, but she is in the paws of Starclan now. Sootpaw... He's alive for now, but he... he'll be in Starclan soon enough." Emberstripe searched for worry, anger, pity, but only found guilt. She hadn't been able to save him. A never ending battle against death, that she had lost once more. Another star in the sky to remind her, and other medicine cats, that they had lost the battle again. "You can go back now." Nightbreeze was headed away to the few herbs that she had brought and headed back. Cherrypaw and Aurora supported him, in a slow walk back to camp
